Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), has according to their mandate, committed to facilitating the Bionas East Africa Group, an investor set to implement 4 major projects in Uganda. Mrs. Kaguhangire, the UIA Executive Director signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bionas last week 23rd/February/2018 to facilitate the engagement with the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies relevant to realize the implementation of their projects, which are hoped to contribute greatly to the development of the economy. This MoU signing was witnessed by Hon. Evelyn Anite, the State Minister for Investment and Privatization.
The four projects of focus include: Jatropha Agropolitan Business Corridor Clusters Development – There is ongoing engagement with the Local Government Ministry, Districts, entities and individuals. The project which is expected to cover 120 districts will create jobs for 1.8 million people;
Green Townships and Affordable Housing – Design and develop Green Townships in several areas with affordable housing facilities using latest technologies in Industrialized Building System (IBS) and Pre-Engineered Green Housing System. The affordable housing project is envisaged to build 1.3 million houses. UIA has initiated ongoing discussions with the Ministries of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, as well as Local Government. The other projects will generate energy from waste and see the establishment of a new low cost Green International Airport at one of the lakes to cater for the fast growing eco-tourism industry in the area on a Build, Operate and Transfer basis. The proposals were submitted to the relevant government entities and discussions will ensue in earnest to ensure implementation in this calendar year 2018.
According to BIONAS, the projects will be implemented by a Consortium of 21 Malaysian and 6 Chinese companies with various required expertise, who will fund the projects 100% with no financial implications on the Government of Uganda.
