When Juliet Kanyesigye developed a troublesome skin disorder, she threw all she could at it but there was no improvement. A scientist herself, she kept researching on how best to deal with the skin problem until she landed on the strong medicinal credentials of goat milk.

Mustering her little resources and own labour, she set up Kanyes Dairm Farm, specializing in dairy goats for milk. She says goat milk is so nutritious and rich in medical ingredients that it has the potential to keep the doctor away, in addition to improving skin health.

In 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she pivoted to bathing soaps made from goat milk, and shortly after she diversified into goat-milk cosmetics, all trading under the brand name Kanyes (shortened from her name, Kanyesigye).

The products are certified by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards and come in eco-friendly packaging. “I encourage Ugandans to buy and use our products because they are of high quality and have many benefits”, she says.

Lately, she has ventured into organic fertilizer made from goat droppings and other agro-waste.

Kanyesigye has also transformed her farm into a training platform for aspiring goat farmers, with the aim of widening the dairy goat farming sub-sector because, as she puts it, “dairy goat farming and value chain have lots to offer and yet not exploited”.

She says her enterprise contributes to Uganda’s development agenda by engaging in dairy farming, value addition, creating jobs, and boosting government revenues.

Kanyesigye is thankful for partnerships that have propelled her initiative: National Social Security Fund’s Hi-Innovator, Nature Fund, Uganda Investment Authority, and the U. S. Mission in Uganda, amongst others.
