The Uganda – India Business Forum

On 5th June 2017, the Office of the Prime Minister in collaboration with Uganda Investment Authority hosted a 42 member Indian delegation from Exim Bank on the Uganda – India Business Forum that was held at the Office of the Prime Minister Conference Hall.

This visit followed an earlier call of a Ugandan delegation led by the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister to New Dehli India for an Indian Africa Project Partnership mission organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Exim Bank of India. It’s during this mission that he extended his invitation to the Exim Bank and Indian business community to Uganda to further discuss possibilities on investment opportunities and means of extending cheaper financing.

The meeting was attended by key Government Ministries represented by their Ministers such as the Rt. Hon Prime Minister, Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda; Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Matia Kasaijja; Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni, UIA ED, Mrs Jolly K. Kaguhangire plus numerous key Private sector players in Uganda

The UIA Executive Director welcomed the different Government officials, the Indian delegation and the Ugandan business community to the forum and stated that it was such an opportunity to have discussions on a high level forum.

She recognized the importance of the Indian community and noted that they were the first manufacturers in Uganda. This started a long lasting relationship that has survived many challenges along the way and shows that there’s hope for a continuous strong relationship.

The meeting was informed that India has one of the highest investments in Uganda and has been among the top 5 FDI inflow countries for the last three years. It should further be noted that a number of Indians are Ugandan citizens and these are among the top investors in the country.

She appreciated Exim Bank’s willingness to come to Uganda and noted that its involvement will give a big push to facilitating lines of credit and funding in the country.

UIA ED concluded by pledging UIA’s support to ease their doing of business through the already established digitalized One Stop Centre (www.ebiz.go.ug) for investors.
